Immediately following her sudden resignation announcement Friday, left wing bloggers began spreading the word that Palin was under federal investigation. The claims featured no sources, but asserted that the Alaska Governor quit because she would soon be facing embezzlement charges. On Saturday, the FBI’s Alaskan spokesman, Special Agent Eric Gonzalez laid the rumors to rest.
“There is absolutely no truth to those rumors that we’re investigating her or getting ready to indict her.” He added that there was “no wiggle room” in his statement, and said definitively, “It’s just not true.”
Palin’s lawyers issued a strongly worded statement condemning the false allegations, and stated that they will be looking at suing certain websites and media outlets for defamation of character.
So, much to the chagrin of the left, it looks like Palin’s resignation had nothing to do with scandal. The move now leaves everyone, on both sides of the aisle, scratching their heads and wondering: what’s next?
In a message posted Saturday to her Facebook page, Palin explained her decision, and alluded to a “higher calling.”
She wrote: “The response in the main stream media has been most predictable, ironic, and as always, detached from the lives of ordinary Americans who are sick of the “politics of personal destruction”. How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it’s about country. And though it’s honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make. But every American understands what it takes to make a decision because it’s right for all, including your family.”
It remains to be seen just what that calling might be, but it’s clear that those who would count the Governor out, as always, do so at their own risk.
