Yes, Kim Jong Il is a formidable foe. One, apparently, that Barack Obama was unable to handle on his own. It was time to bring in the big guns. It was time to call Clinton.
Hilliary Clinton, his secretary of State?
Of course not, don’t be silly. Obama doesn’t let her out of his sight these days. He called the BIG guns. Bill Clinton - a man, a former president, still revered and respected all over the world.
Before we make a serious point about the current administration, we’d like to a take a moment to salute the former leader, and say “job well done.” By securing freedom for the two American reporters wrongfully imprisoned in North Korea, he’s reminded us all what real diplomacy looks like. Assuming he managed to avoid giving Kim Jong Il any more nuclear technology, this was a classic Clinton masterstroke.
That said, we’re left to wonder what it says about Barack Obama and his team. A president shouldn’t have to send one of his predecessors to carry out his foreign policy. That’s what his Secretary of State is for. If Obama’s deeds, words, promises, and threats don’t carry enough international weight to handle a low level incident without calling in the cavalry, he’s treading dangerously close to lame-duck status.
It’s wonderful that the two reporters are home safely. There’s nothing to gripe about in terms of the outcome. Clearly, it’s a win for Obama too, since he can claim credit without ever getting his hands dirty or facing the possibility of engaging the issue and failing.
However, Obama’s now presented with nearly the exact same situation in Iran. Since Ahmadinejad has, like Kim Jong Il, demonstrated his complete lack of respect for the current president, who will Obama send this time?
Is it actually Hillary’s turn to do her job?
Probably not. Maybe Carter’s available.
