In 2000 Kevin Jennings, now Barack Obama’s handpicked “Safe Schools Czar,” was the Director of a group called GLSEN: The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network.  According to GLSEN’s website, their goal is to empower gay youth, and teach them how to stop harassment.

So far, so good.

The organization also tries to get books into schools that it believes will lead to increased tolerance of gay students.  This is where things get dicey.  Throughout the last decade, right up until the present, the GLSEN has maintained a reading list.  The books it recommends are targeted at three age groups: Kindergarten – 6th Grade, 7th -12th, and materials for educators.  What’s contained within the recommended books is utterly astonishing.

Here, I’m going to stop and warn you.  Things are going to get explicit.  If you’re under 18, offended easily, or don’t want to read anything that may be sexually graphic, go to another article or website.

OK…..

You’ve been warned….

Among the passages are highly explicit depictions of straight sex, gay sex, oral sex, anal sex, sex between students and teachers, sex between pre-schoolers, sex between young children and adults, underage threesomes, and five-year-olds playing sex games.  There are scenes of masturbation, rape, molestation and 13 year old boys tasting each others semen.  One of the books goes so far as to showcase prostitution as a way for young girls to build their self-esteem.

Everything you’d expect to be reccomended by a “Safe Schools Czar,” right?

Now, I can hear the apologists already.  They’ll say Jennings didn’t give the speech, and that he probably didn’t know those comments were going to be in it.  Likewise, they won’t try and defend the books, but they’ll claim the Obama administration knew nothing about GLSEN’s recommendations.

The problem is, it’s clear that they had to.  Kevin Jenning’s bio on the official ED.gov website lists his directorship of GLSEN as his foremost achievement.  It’s not just some minor blip in a long, varied career.  His stewardship of GLSEN is the main reason Obama hired him.  The text from this government bio reads as follows:

Kevin Jennings, Assistant Deputy Secretary, Office of Safe & Drug Free Schools
Kevin Jennings is the founder and former executive director of the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), an organization that works to make schools safe for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Prior to his tenure at GLSEN, Jennings served as History Department chair and a history teacher at Concord Academy in Massachusetts and before that as a history teacher at Moses Brown School in Rhode Island. Jennings has also authored six books including Mama’s Boy, Preacher’s Son: A Memoir which was named a 2007 Book of Honor by the American Library Association and Telling Tales Out of School which was the winner of the 1998 Lambda Literary Award. Jennings received an A.B. in history from Harvard, an M.A. from the Columbia University Teachers College and an M.B.A. from NYU’s Stern School of Business.

As the contents of the reccomended reading list become more well known, the calls for Jenning’s job become louder.  So far, 53 Congressmen, all of them Republicans, have demanded his firing.

Let me make one thing perfectly clear.  This is not an issue about straight or gay.  This isn’t about about the books themselves, or the sex acts they describe.  This is about the fact that your President has placed the safety of your children in the hands of a man who has built a career around recommending this stuff, in schools, to kids as young as five

Van Jones, John Holdren, and now Kevin Jennings.  Well done, Mr. President.
